Mission Statement

Proudly serving since 1881, the Wellington Community Fire District protects the citizens and property of our six communities, by providing professional, courteous, and cost effective fire prevention, protection and emergency services.

Annual Recognition Dinner

Over one hundred firefighters, board members and special guests were in attendance at the Penfield Community Center for an evening of camaraderie and celebration on January 30.  Following dinner, new badges and service awards were presented to current firefighters.  A special presentation was done by State House Representative Terry Boose, honoring our retired members who served more than twenty years with a retired badge and a proclamation from the State of Ohio House of Representatives.  Also honored was retired Penfield Township Trustee, Tom Younglas, who served the community for thirty-six years.

Also honored was the 2009 Firefighter of the Year, presented to Greg Frenk.  Firefighter Frenk, who is also an EMS First Responder, remains active in numerous roles on the department.  Greg has been active in the Lorain County Hazardous Materials Team, the County Dive Team and Swiftwater Team.  Additionally, Greg is also a trained Rope Rescue Technician.  Frenk has maintained an active role in several committees on the department, such as the most recent Fire District levy promotion campaign.  Additionally, he is active in the on-going station coverage program.  Most impressively, Greg is a workhorse on the fireground and is a valuable entry firefighter.  Greg works full-time for the Village of Wellington as the Chief Operator of the Wastewater plant.  He and his wife Connie are the proud parents of daughters Erin, Karlie, and son Alex.

Homeland Security Grant / LEPC Funding

The Wellington Fire District was recently awarded $13,556 to purchase new portable radios and mobile radios through a county-wide grant from the Department of Homeland Security.  The funding enabled reprogramming of ALL communications equipment in the county, which in a large scale incident, would allow all responding agencies to communicate with each other.

Also, the Local Emergency Planning Committee of Lorain County was able to provide funding for an underwater sonar detection unit.  This unit can be used for body recovery, as well as weapons and evidence recovery.  The project was spearheaded by Chief Walker and Sheffield Village Fire Chief Jeff Young and will enable all county divers to operate more efficiently, but most importantly, more safely.  The unit cost $41,000 and is currently housed at the Wellington Fire District Station 2.  In December, seven WFD personnel attended a two day training on the setup and operation of this unit.

Shriners Honor WFD Lieutenant

Lieutenant Brian Slack, a ten year veteran of the department, was honored by the Al Koran Temple on February 2, 2010 for heroism.  In 2009, Lt. Slack, while off-duty, provided lifesaving CPR to a neighbor who had went into cardiac arrest on the side of the road.  Lt. Slack preformed CPR until an ambulance arrived and continued in the ambulance providing care.

The Fire District Board of Trustees and members of the department congratulate Lt. Brian Slack for his contributions not only to the Fire District, but also to his community.
