Today’s firefighters must be multi-skilled in not only fire suppression, but also vehicle extrication, hazardous materials response, confined space rescue, water rescue, and emergency medical training. Through Chief Walker’s tenure as fire chief, training has been a priority with the Wellington Fire District. Today’s firefighters average nearly 125 hours of training annually.
Of the thirty-three members on the roster, twenty-one firefighters have more training than the State of Ohio requires, with nineteen having the highest possible training for a firefighter. Additionally, seventeen firefighters are also Basic Emergency Medical Technicians, one is an Intermediate E.M.T., and one firefighter is also a Paramedic. The department also has several water rescue divers, eleven fire safety inspectors, two State Certified Fire Instructors, and nine rope rescue trained personnel.
